How it works

Book a verified hostel in four steps

Finding a place near college usually means dealing with brokers, unclear rent and photos that look nothing like the room. Hostelova exists to make the whole thing boring and predictable: verified properties, the full price up front, and a booking that is confirmed the moment you pay.

The four steps

  1. Search near your college Enter your college or locality. You get verified hostels, PGs and flats nearby, each with its distance, the sharing types available and the monthly rent — not a phone number to call.
2. Compare the real numbers Every listing shows real photos of the actual rooms, the sharing options with their prices, the refundable security deposit and any maintenance charge. Nothing appears for the first time at checkout.
  3. Pay securely online Pick your move-in date and how many months you want. You see the whole payable amount — rent, deposit, maintenance and one service fee — then pay by UPI, card or netbanking through Razorpay.
  4. Get instant confirmation The room is locked to you the moment the payment succeeds, so nobody else can book it while you are deciding. You get a receipt, the owner's contact details, and the booking in your app.

What you pay, and what comes back

A booking has two kinds of money in it, and we keep them visibly separate because students are routinely surprised by this:

Room rent

Rent for the months you booked, plus maintenance if the owner charges it. This is the cost of staying — it does not come back.

Security deposit

Refundable. It is held, not spent, and returned when you exit subject to the property's condition terms. Shown as its own line everywhere.

Service fee

A single fee covering booking, payment handling and support. Shown before you pay and on your receipt. No brokerage on top.

Every quote, receipt and PDF invoice repeats this split, including a panel that states the refundable deposit next to the room rent so you can see at a glance how much of your payment you get back.

How properties get verified

A listing cannot go live on its own. Before a property appears in search, the owner submits Aadhaar identity documents and proof that they control the property, and our team reviews the submission. Identity documents are stored privately — students never see them, other owners never see them, and they are not reachable by a public link.

Listings also carry the details that decide whether a place is actually liveable: sharing type, floor and room number, amenities, house rules and the owner's response record. If a hostel stops responding, that shows.

How your room is held while you pay

The moment you start checkout, that room leaves the pool for everyone else — the same way a train seat is blocked while you are on the payment page. If the payment succeeds, the room is yours. If you close the page or the payment fails, the hold is released and the room goes straight back on the map for other students.

This is why a room cannot be sold twice on Hostelova, and why you will occasionally see a room disappear from the floor plan while you are looking at it. Nothing is oversold, and nobody pays for a bed that no longer exists.

What happens after you pay

  1. The payment is verified on our servers before anything is confirmed — the app is never trusted on its own.
  2. Your booking is created with the room, floor and move-in date you chose, and a booking code you can quote to the owner.
  3. A receipt lands in your email with the full breakdown, including the refundable deposit shown separately.
  4. The owner is notified that the room is taken, and the seat count on the listing drops by one.
  5. Everything stays visible under your bookings — dates, room number, payment record and messages from the hostel.

If your connection drops at the wrong second, the booking still completes. The payment gateway notifies our servers independently, so a confirmed payment always becomes a confirmed booking even if your phone never made it back to the app.

If something goes wrong

Cancel within 3 days of booking and before move-in, and the booking amount is refunded to your original payment method within 5 to 7 working days; the service fee is not refundable. Cancelling also puts your room back on the map for other students immediately.

Every cancellation opens a refund you can follow, with its own refund ID, rather than an email saying it is “being processed”. It moves through these stages, and you are notified at each one:

If a refund fails at the gateway, it is flagged and retried by our team — you do not have to chase it. Full detail is in the refund and cancellation policy.

Common questions

Is the security deposit refundable?

Yes. It is shown as a separate refundable line on every quote and receipt, and returned when you exit subject to the property's condition terms.

Do I pay any brokerage?

No. Hostelova charges no brokerage. You pay the property's rent and deposit plus one transparent service fee shown at checkout.

Can two students book the same room?

No. The room is held for you the moment you start checkout and locked to you when payment succeeds, so a room can never be sold twice.

Which cities is Hostelova live in?

Hostelova is live in Lucknow and expanding across India. See hostels in Lucknow.

I own a hostel — how do I list it?

See list your property. Verification usually completes within 48 hours.
